Gift to U.S. Holocaust Museum’s Endowment Fund Is Institution’s Largest

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum received a gift of $17.2 million from the estate of Eric F. Ross of Palm Beach, FL, and West Orange, NJ.  It is the largest single gift to the institution.  Eric and his late wife, Lore, both of whom were refugees from Nazi Germany, donated more than $12 million to the institution during their lifetimes. In total, they have contributed more than $30 million to the Museum. Continue reading

Long Overdue Memorial Honors Fallen Jewish Chaplains at Arlington National Cemetery

On October 24, the 14 Jewish chaplains who have died in service to our nation were finally commemorated at Arlington Cemetery. While the names of the fallen Protestant and Catholic chaplains have been recognized on Chaplains Hill in Arlington Cemetery since 1981 and 1989, respectively, a monument will now be unveiled and erected alongside the others to recognize these brave Jewish chaplains. Jewish people memorialize loved ones in a myriad of ways: gravestones, plaques, Torah learning sessions, philanthropy to the departed one’s favorite causes, and more. To make something beautiful from a sad experience is intrinsic to Jewish practice. So, when Ellen Copeland Buchine’s 46-year-old sister, Betsy Copeland, succumbed to Type B Lymphoma in 2009, a mere 19 days after her diagnosis, and her father, Peter Copeland, died of heart failure a short eight months later, Ellen sought to execute a unique memorial for them both.
